Dunlop Withdraw Motorsport Tyre Manufacturing from UK

Dunlop, one of motorsport’s leading tyre manufacturers has decided to relocate their motorsport division to France and Germany, owing to ‘lack of feasibility’ of continuing the production from their Birmingham base. The relocation of this division will mean that 241 jobs will be affected, however the manufacturing giant has stated its desire to ‘retain talent’, particularly in the research and development sector.

Established in 1888, Dunlop has provided motorsport tyres for countless race winners in both car and motorcycle competitions. As well as race victories, Dunlop were the tyre manufacturer of choice for 5 land speed records. The company is owned by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and their Birmingham base produces approximately 300,000 specialised racing tyres every year. Dunlop has been responsible for many innovations in the performance tyre sector, including the invention of the DSST system, which enabled cars to drive on flat tyres.

After the proposed move has taken place, their motorcycle tyres will be manufactured in Montlucon, France, and the car tyres will be created in Hanau, Germany. The manufacturer has stated that the lease on their Erdington factory will expire on 1st September and after discussions with local authorities, no suitable local alternative site could be found to continue production. The lease on the Erdington factory has now been taken up by Jaguar, who will expand their production facilities to an 11 acre site that borders the plant.

Dunlop has promised to support any and all staff affected by the upcoming move, with MD of Dunlop Brand Europe Sanjay Khanna pledging to work with staff and Unions throughout the consultation process. The company has shared its proposals with the European Central Works Council and remains subject to discussions with Trade Union representatives.
