How to Keep the Kids Busy on Long Car Journeys

Even if you’re a fan of driving, long car journeys can be challenging for a number of reasons – it might be an unfamiliar route, an uninspiring drive or perhaps you’re driving with some young passengers and you’re concerned about how you’re going to keep their spirits up during your time on the road. Children are one of the biggest distractions to drivers, and so it’s important to keep them occupied for safety reasons as well as your own sanity. In this article, Tyres Northampton will talk you through some of the best ways to keep kids busy on long car journeys.

Happy family in the car - keep kids busy during long car journeys

Games

You can give the kids your iPad or your smartphone to play on if you like, but if you want to keep it simple there’s no substitute for a good old game of ‘I Spy’. Of course, it’ll be a little testing to try and keep it up for the entire journey, but it can certainly provide a bit of fun for your children – particularly if you’re driving through a scenic area.

Audiobooks

If your car has smartphone connectivity, bluetooth audio or you have an aux cable, then audiobooks can be your (and your children’s) best friend. Download some of their favourite books onto your phone in audio format – there are millions of audiobooks available – and put them on for the journey. Audiobooks can last for hours, and they may well keep the children captivated or maybe even send them off to sleep.

Regular stops

“I need the toilet!” is a regular complaint heard from the back seat, and unless you happen to be near a rest stop, you’ll have to deliver the bad news that they’ll have to wait for a while, which can of course lead to tears and tantrums. It’s important to make sure you stop regularly to allow young children to go to the toilet – although it might delay your journey, it’s better than having to clean up the resulting mess if you don’t stop in time.

Snacks

Snacks not only stave off hunger but they can also keep kids quiet and happy for a certain amount of time. Whether you keep the snacks healthy or provide some chocolate and crisps is up to you, but it’s important to make sure you don’t give in to complaints and requests for more food – space out the snacks and you’ll keep the children calmer for longer.

Comfortable clothes

Nobody’s going to judge you for not dressing in high fashion for a long car journey. Choose comfortable clothes for everyone – make sure they’re appropriate for the weather – and you’ll reduce complaints from the passengers in the rear. Joggers, shorts, hoodies – if it’s comfortable and climate-sensible, then it’s ideal.

Smartphones and tablets

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to keep kids busy on long car journeys is to give them your phone or tablet. You can load up YouTube or you can download films and TV programmes onto your device if you have accounts with streaming platforms. This can keep the children occupied for the whole journey if you have enough videos for them to watch.

There are plenty of things you can do to make a long drive more enjoyable for everyone involved. With calm children, you’ve one less distraction and you can focus on the road ahead.
