ContinentalContinental has announced a major milestone in its journey towards climate neutrality, achieving significant CO₂ emission reductions across all its European tyre production facilities. Since 2020, the company has successfully reduced its CO₂ emissions in Europe by approximately 35%, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing.
This achievement forms part of Continental’s ambitious target to become fully climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest. By 2030, the company aims to halve CO₂ emissions at all its tyre production sites worldwide compared to 2018 levels. The current progress in Europe is a testament to its proactive approach, driven by targeted investment in innovative technologies and energy optimisation initiatives.
The reduction was achieved through a combination of measures, including the use of green electricity, optimisation of energy-intensive processes, and enhanced energy management systems. Continental highlighted that all its European tyre plants already use 100% renewable electricity, significantly contributing to the reduced carbon footprint.

Continental’s tyre plants in Europe include sites in Germany, Portugal, France, Romania, and the Czech Republic, among others. Each facility has implemented individual projects tailored to local requirements, such as waste heat recovery, upgraded steam and compressed air systems, and improved curing processes, all contributing to lower energy consumption and CO₂ output.
A spokesperson for Continental stated:
“We are proud to achieve this milestone, which reflects the dedication of our teams across Europe. Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy, and reducing CO₂ emissions in production is essential for reaching our climate targets. This success motivates us to continue on this path with even greater determination.”
Continental continues to invest heavily in decarbonising its production processes worldwide. Its approach combines energy efficiency improvements with strategic technological upgrades to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The company also develops its own renewable energy generation projects to further strengthen supply security and reduce carbon emissions.
In addition to reducing emissions at production sites, Continental is focusing on the entire tyre lifecycle. Its strategy includes increasing the use of sustainable materials, optimising tyre rolling resistance to lower vehicle fuel consumption, and expanding circular economy initiatives such as retreading and recycling.
The company’s comprehensive sustainability goals have been recognised across the automotive industry. Continental’s ambition is to achieve completely climate-neutral production by 2040, and climate neutrality along its entire value chain by 2050 at the latest. This includes all upstream processes, raw materials, logistics, and end-of-life tyre management.
As demand grows for sustainable mobility solutions, Continental’s proactive progress in CO₂ reduction positions it as a leader in environmentally responsible tyre manufacturing. Customers, automotive manufacturers, and partners can be confident that Continental remains committed to delivering premium tyre solutions with minimal environmental impact.
