The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), presented by Bridgestone, will once again feature at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, taking place from 11th to 14th July 2024. This year, the IAC's AV-24 fully autonomous racecar, developed using cutting-edge robotics, will be operated by software from the PoliMOVE-MSU team, with support from the UNIMORE Racing team.

The AV-24, a fully autonomous racecar built on a Dallara chassis used in the Indy NXT series, showcases advanced technology from leading autonomous hardware and software providers. Since the IAC's inception in 2021, it has organised competitions involving 10 teams from 18 universities at prestigious venues like Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, and Monza F1 Circuit. This year marks the IAC’s competitive debut in the UK, testing technology in new and challenging ways.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Since 2021, the IAC and its university teams have set several world records in high-speed ground-based autonomy:

  • Autonomous land speed record: 192.2 mph
  • Highest on-track speed: 180 mph
  • Fastest head-to-head overtake on-track: 177 mph
  • Most miles of autonomous racing: 9,000 miles

In 2023, the IAC was introduced to Goodwood as part of Future Lab presented by Randox, demonstrating its role in advancing autonomous driving technology. The Technical University of Munich used their autonomous racecar to create a digital twin of the Goodwood hill, aiding this year’s autonomous hillclimb.

Unique Challenges at Goodwood

Paul Mitchell, Chairman and President of the IAC, shared his excitement about the event: "We are eager to tackle the unique challenges of the Goodwood Hillclimb. Unlike traditional ovals and F1 circuits, Goodwood’s Hillclimb will test the precision of sensor perception, GPS localisation, vehicle dynamics, and path planning, showcasing the future of high-speed autonomous mobility."

As part of Goodwood’s FOS TECH programme, the event will highlight the latest in automotive technology and alternative fuels, including Future Lab and STEM programmes for young enthusiasts. The IAC teams aim to set an autonomous world record on the Goodwood hill, demonstrating AI’s potential to revolutionise vehicle safety and efficiency.

A Vision for the Future

The Duke of Richmond, founder of the Festival of Speed, remarked on the festival’s role in technological innovation: "Our FOS TECH ethos brings together future technology and mobility content. Visitors can experience groundbreaking innovations and envision tomorrow’s world."

Sara Correa, Chief Marketing Officer for Bridgestone in EMEA, commented: "Collaborating to advance the future of mobility is vital. Bridgestone is proud to partner with the IAC, testing and improving autonomous technologies at the Goodwood Hillclimb. The insights gained here can be applied to sustainable solutions for society and our customers."
